Boat Deck Overview

BOAT DECK | AMIDSHIPS

00:00 / 01:20

The Boat Deck contains the ship’s four life boats and quarters for the ship’s officers. On the rear, or aft, portion of the deck is the ventilated roof for the engine room. The louvers are raised and lowered by controls at the top of the engine room.

At the aft portion of the deck there was a large bin for the storage of potatoes during the war which is now no longer present. Between the engine room’s ventilated roof and the house is a tiny covered shoot where coal would be loaded for the galley’s oven. Note the rectangular vertical shaft, this is the ventilation shaft for the galley. The smaller round shaft, often referred to as ‘Charlie Noble’ is the exhaust stack for the ships coal burning stove.
